Recipient of NAFA’s 2013 Bo Johnson Spirit Award for Lifetime Achievement Bill Cain

NAFA’s Insurance Marketing Advisory Committee (IMAC) presented the 2013 Bo Johnson Spirit Award for Lifetime Achievement to industry veteran Bill Cain on October 17 at the IMO Summit held in Aspen, Colorado.

Cain is the Chief Executive Officer of Financial Independence Group, Inc. Dr. Cain was active in his profession of counseling psychology and was teaching at a local university when he first became involved in the insurance industry by conducting several seminars for the sales force of a friend who owned an agency. Cain launched his career in the insurance industry in 1976. His wife and partner, Ericka, joined him in 1987. The company grew from an MGA concentrating on Medicare supplements and health products to Financial Independence Group, Inc., a small, national marketing company.

To get to that next level, it took vision and a very big step. In 1997, Bo Johnson was hired as Chief Marketing Officer. Cain, with his experience, and Johnson, with his energy and vision, skyrocketed FIG from a small company to one of the most recognized marketing companies in the country.

Dr. Cain received an undergraduate degree in Speech and a graduate degree in Theology. He went on to earn a Doctor of Education degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. For more than 25 years, he has recruited, trained and mentored agents. He is an author, including writing training manuals for agents, and is a national speaker.

NAFA’s IMAC committee named the lifetime achievement award in honor of Bo Johnson.  Johnson was well known for his energy, enthusiasm and love of the fixed annuity industry. He was a proud member of NAFA, serving as a board member for several years and was the original chair of IMAC. His life was cut much too short when he died in 2009, after a courageous fight with cancer. He exhibited the attributes outlined in the award created in his name and left a very positive and lasting imprint on the annuity industry.

The award recognizes the courage, spirit and determination of one who challenges the status quo, inspires others to achieve, contributes unselfishly to others, and works ethically and conscientiously to improve the fixed annuity marketplace.
